Throughout the years National City’s name has evolved over time. The Spaniard were the first to claim the land from Indians and named this land “Ranch of the King”. In 1810 the Mexican government reclaimed the land and named it “Ranch of the Nation”. In 1845 the land became property of the United States government and was again remained “The National Ranch”. Finally in 1868 three brothers from San Francisco purchased the land and began the formation of the city that is now called National City. However around 1950 the city began to acquire a new name given to it by the public, “The Mile of Bars”. This came about as result of the many bars that were opened to entertain sailors at the large naval base in town. The city government was not very fond of the association with this drinking culture and urged car dealerships to open. The push for change founded one of the most notable sectors of the city commonly known as “The Mile of Cars”. Through shear coincidence National City was one of the first cities in the country to develop and be credited with idea of a “auto mall”. Unfortunately with these many changes National City drew a high crime rate. While this has declined since the mid 20th century National City continues to have the highest crime rate in all of San Diego county.
